Poor hair hygiene negatively impacts our personal,
social and psychological condition
A mere “bad hair day” can crush our self esteem, make us less sociable and ruin our day. Can you imagine going for weeks/months/years with uncut hair? A haircut can have a profound impact on a homeless individual who may not have access to it on a regular basis. It can boost their self esteem, lift their spirit, and improve their outlook on life.
Sidewalk Salon is a non-profit organization that provides haircuts to the homeless. We partner with volunteers from local hair salons and cosmetology schools who offer their professional skills to help those less fortunate. We bring our services to homeless shelters throughout the San Francisco bay area.
Our Vision & Mission
Our vision is for people everywhere to have access to good hair hygiene.
To achieve this end, we strive to provide quality hair care services to those experiencing homelessness to help them gain a positive self-image and better outlook on life.
The roots of the lotus plant are stuck deep in the mud, but it still grows above murky water and blossoms into a beautiful flower. In Buddhist symbolism, the lotus represents how we rise up from our sufferings to reach enlightenment, beauty and clarity. Red signifies love and compassion.
The red lotus represents Sidewalk Salon's goal of helping homeless individuals rise from their situations and take steps toward a better life.
Homelessness by the numbers
On any given night, there are over 600,000 people experiencing homelessness in the United States.
Of that number, about 220,000 are people in families, and 388,000 are individuals.
About 18 percent of the homeless population are considered chronically homeless.
About 9 percent of homeless adults are veterans.

The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step. -Laozi
With such daunting statistics, it's difficult to imagine how you can possibly make a dent in solving the prevalent issue of homelessness in our community. At Sidewalk Salon, we believe in the power of taking the first step in the right direction. A haircut is a step toward restoring self esteem and planting the seed for a brighter future beyond homelessness.
Drop us a line.
We'd love to hear from you!
